Home on the Range and Oven

Twenty years is the average lifespan for stoves and ovens. The US DOE estimates that cooking accounts for 4.5 percent of the energy used at home. All appliances have two costs—the purchase price and the operating cost.

Newer ovens have high insulation, tighter-fitting oven door gaskets, and hinges to save energy. These include self-cleaning models that use less energy for normal cooking because of additional insulation levels. However, new ovens and stovetops—also called kitchen stoves and ranges—have no federal energy regulations, so they don’t carry EnergyGuide labels or EnergyStar recommendations. Remember that an electric oven might need a 220- to 240-volt outlet.

Use a microwave for reheating and defrosting, especially in small portions as they are 70 percent more efficient than conventional ovens. Slow cookers and pressure cookers are far more efficient than regular stovetops or ovens for long cooking periods.
